Grand secteur de vallée alluviale, ce site est reconnu pour sa richesse écologique exceptionnelle, et en particulier avifaunistique. La gestion du site visera prioritairement à mettre en oeuvre des mesures agroenvironnementales telles que celles retenues dans le cadre de l'ancienne opération locale menée en amont de Rethel

La vallée de l'Aisne en aval de Château Porcien présente encore un aspect très intéressant pour l'avifaune, avec la présence de nombreuses prairies de fauche. Ce secteur est particulièrement important pour les cigognes (noires et blanches).
