Other Site Characteristics

Ce complexe forestier intègre l'essentiel des potentialités forestières du Valois, sur substrats tertiaires variés (calclaires grossiers, marno-calcaires, sables acides parsemés de nombreux chaos de grès, argile et formations à meulières). La palette des habitats forestiers est globalement dans un état d'exemplarité et de représentativité des ensembles caténaux du Tertiaire parisien. Le site joue un rôle biogéographique important et partage les influences atlantiques, médio-européennes et montagnardes. Parmi les habitats forestiers inscrits à la directive, on mentionnera surtout les séries neutro-acidiclines à neutro-calcicoles des hêtraies-chênaies collinéennes submédioeuropéennes (Galio odorati-Fagetum sylvaticae et Hordelymo europaei-Fagetum sylvaticae), la série rivulaire des frênaies hygrophiles (Carici remotae-Fraxinetum excelsioris), la série acidophile subcontinentale sèche (Fago sylvaticae-Quercetum petraeae) bien développé sur sables auversiens avec nombreux affleurements gréseux riches en bryophytes et lichens,... L'état global de conservation des espaces est correct mis à part quelques enrésinements limités dans les secteurs de sable. Une gestion ordinaire prenant en compte le maintien de la biodiversité devrait suffire à assurer la pérennité des espaces forestiers remarquables.

4.2 Quality and importance

La taille du massif lui confère un intérêt écosystémique européen pour l'avifaune forestière nicheuse et les populations de grands mammifères. Le site est entièrement inventorié en ZICO. Outre ces aspects, les intérêts spécifiques connus sont surtout floristiques (plantes rares en limite d'aire ou en aire disjointe, notamment le cortège submontagnard aujourd'hui très réduit (mais avec encore Equisetum sylvaticum, Gymnocarpium robertianum), 6 espèces protégées, nombreuses plantes menacées. Le site Natura 2000 présente également un fort enjeu pour la préservation du Petit Rhinolophe en Picardie. Des travaux de restauration et d'aménagement spécifiques sur la maison forestière du Bois Harriez ont permis de protéger efficacement la colonie, à la fois en période de reproduction et d'hibernation.
