Le massif forestier de Saint-Gobain et Coucy-Basse constitue un ensemble écologique remarquable du fait de ses dimensions et est caractérisé par une avifaune nicheuse diversifiée. L'état de conservation général du massif de Saint-Gobain et Coucy-Basse peut être qualifié de satisfaisant.

4.2 Quality and importance

La forêt de Saint-Gobain & Coucy-Basse est l'un des vastes complexes forestiers de la Picardie. Il occupe une importante butte témoin du rebord septentrional de la cote de l'Ile de France. Cette butte domine d'une centaine de mètres les plaines du Laonnois ; elle présente un relief marqué et est coupée de vallons étroits et sinueux. Les vallées de Saint-Nicolas-aux-Bois et de Prémontré entaillent plus fortement le massif. Le massif, occupé sur un peu plus de la moitié de sa surface par de la hêtraie, intègre une grande part des potentialités forestières et biologiques des sols et du climat du Tertiaire parisien.
