Other Site Characteristics

Le site est situé dans la dépression de la Woëvre au pied des Côtes de Meuse. Il est constitué par une zone humide située à proximité de Chaumont-devant Damvillers et dominée par la butte témoin du Buisson Chaumont. La majorité du site ne bénéficie d'aucune protection. Le fonctionnement hydraulique du marais a été dégradé par le recalibrage de la Thinte et le creusement au nord d'un fossé ; cela se traduit par une forte dynamique de recolonisation arbustive et par l'eutrophisation de certaines zones de molinaies. Faute de l'entretien nécessaire et des dysfonctionnements hydrauliques, de nombreux secteurs de la tourbière sont dans un mauvais état de conservation.

4.2 Quality and importance

La tourbière alcaline de Chaumont-devant-Damvillers figure parmi les 6 tourbières alcalines de Lorraine d'intérêt national à européen. La présence de l'habitat de tourbière basse alcaline à Carex davalliana en situation quasi exclusive pour la Lorraine et ce sur plusieurs hectares, justifie cette qualification.
