Other Site Characteristics

Le site regroupe les espaces les plus caractéristiques de la corniche de Pail, de la forêt de Multonne et du mont des Avaloirs, qui constitue le point culminant du massif armoricain (417 m.). Par sa situation géographique, à proximité d'agglomérations importantes et sa position de point culminant de la Sarthe, le site offre un attrait touristique non négligeable. - Les milieux forestiers et les landes ont été largement enrésinés. Toutefois, la production de feuillus conserve localement un intérêt économique favorable à leur conservation. - La gestion des landes reste problématique en l'absence de perspective de valorisation économique de ces milieux ; de plus, elles sont perçues comme une menace du fait de risques de développement d'incendies importants. - La qualité des eaux reste satisfaisante, le contrôle des épandages agricoles permettant de limiter les risques de pollution.

Le site présente un ensemble de milieux et de formations végétales variées : chênaies acidophiles, localement en mélange avec de la hêtraie, souvent enrésinées, landes sèches et humides à Ericacées et Molinie, tourbières acides à Sphaignes, prairies humides et végétation aquatique.
