Other Site Characteristics

Plateau sur calcaires durs crétacés bordé à l'ouest par des micro-falaises et au nord par des versants abrupts précédant un thalweg encaissé abritant une petite zone humide (source). Une grande partie du plateau est parsemée de blocs rocheux et de petites fosses d'extraction résultant de l'exploitation passée des calcaires durs du Turonien pour la pierre à construction et la réalisation de meules. Les Arrêtés Préfectoraux de Protection de Biotope ont permis de stopper la plupart des diverses menaces anthropiques auxquelles était soumis le site : construction d'habitations, "écorchage" des pelouses par le passage régulier de motos tout-terrain, points de rudéralisation, mise en culture des bas de versants, plantation de conifères, projet d'extension de carrières de granulats. La gestion menée par le Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels doit être pérennisée et élargie à l'ensemble du site Natura 2000, afin de ne pas laisser se développer les problèmes liés à la dynamique naturelle du vieillissement des pelouses (densification de la strate herbacée, élimination des tonsures à thérophytes, progression des fruticées) depuis la disparition de toute activité pastorale. Cependant certaines menaces sont toujours présentes sur le site, notamment motos tout-terrain, vandalisme.

4.2 Quality and importance

Un des sites centre-atlantiques majeurs pour les pelouses calcicoles xéro-thermophiles et leurs habitats associés (fruticées, chênaie pubescente) avec une forte représentation de taxons d'origine méditerranéenne ou méditerranéo-montagnarde. Site particulièrement remarquable par la diversité et les surfaces couvertes par les principales associations végétales typiques de ce milieu : "tonsures" thérophytiques à Arenaria controversa, pelouses vivaces du Sideritido guillonii-Koelerietum vallesianae (race endémique à Globularia valentina) et du Lino salsoloidis-Seslerietum albicantis, fourrés de corniche à Rhamnus saxatilis-Prunus mahaleb, dalles rocheuses à Sedum ochroleucum etc...
