Other Site Characteristics

Plateau de calcaire corallien entaillé par la vallée de l'Anglin présentant une mosaïque de milieux remarquables : hautes falaises calcaires (les plus élevées de la région), grottes naturelles, pelouses sèches et fourrés thermophiles sur le rebord du plateau, prairies humides inondables et forêt alluviale en bordure de l'Anglin. Les grottes hébergeant des colonies de chiroptères sont l'objet de dérangements importants notamment durant la période critique de l'hivernage (spéléologues amateurs, actes de malveillance, etc). Les pelouses sèches du rebord du plateau connaissent une importante dynamique de colonisation arbustive du fait de la déprise agricole et de l'abandon du pâturage ovin ; celles liées aux escarpements rocheux (sommets des falaises) sont soumises à une pression de piétinement ponctuelle mais localement importante de la part des nombreux varappeurs amateurs. La dégradation de la qualité des eaux de l'Anglin reste une menace potentielle mais importante vis à vis de la Mulette épaisse.

4.2 Quality and importance

Sur le plan phytocénotique et botanique, l'intérêt du site se concentre surtout sur les riches pelouses calcicoles xérophiles et la chênaie pubescente du rebord du plateau (nombreux taxons thermophiles dont plusieurs orchidées rares). Sur le plan faunistique, l'existence de plusieurs grottes dont l'une abrite d'importantes colonies de chiroptères (10 espèces) ainsi que la présence de la Mulette épaisse dans les eaux de l'anglin constituent les éléments majeurs.
