Other Site Characteristics

Le site englobe une dizaine de grottes naturelles constituant des gîtes à chiroptères, dont une population d'importance nationale de Rhinolophe euryale. Les surfaces boisées, dominantes, ainsi que les autres habitats constituent des terrains de chasse préférentiels pour les huit espèces de chiroptères figurant à l'Annexe II présentes sur le site. De plus, de nombreuses autres espèces d'intérêt communautaire de groupes taxonomiques variés fréquentent le site : mammifères (Castor, Loutre...), amphibiens (Triton crêté, Triton marbré, Crapaud calamite...), insectes (Cordulie à corps fin, Azuré du serpolet...), poissons (Bouvière, Lamproie marine...). Les grottes naturelles sont l'objet de prospections spéléologiques limitées actuellement. Les dérangements sont néanmoins réguliers et dommageables. L'élevage est encore bien représenté, ce qui permet le maintien d'une surface de prairie raisonnable. Le degré de vulnérabilité du site reste majeur en regard d'autres secteurs très dégradés par l'agriculture intensive.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les populations de chiroptères présentes sur le site sont parmi les plus importantes de la région Poitou-Charentes. La concentration des gîtes ainsi que la présence d'espèces très localisées et vulnérables (Rhinolophe euryale, Murin à oreilles échancrées) contribuent à faire du site une zone essentielle pour la conservation de ces espèces aux niveaux régional et national.
