Site marin intégrant la partie nord du plateau de Rochebonne, situé au large de l'île de Ré. Les fonds marins en périphérie du site sont des sédiments sableux à caillouteux au nord et à l'est et vaseux au sud et à l'ouest. Sur ce site marin, les facteurs d'altération potentielle sont de diverses origines : - pollutions marines par les micro ou macropolluants dont les hydrocarbures : déversements accidentels et volontaires (rejet des huiles de vidange et résidus de fuel) ; - macros-déchets d'origine plastique ingérés notamment par les tortues; - pratiques de pêches potentiellement dommageables pour certaines espèces animales par captures accidentelles ; - collisions accidentelles.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le plateau de Rochebonne est un haut fond hercynien (constitué de granit et schiste) important du socle continental sud-armoricain. Le périmètre du site englobe les secteurs de hauts-fonds situés dans la partie nord du plateau avec des récifs situés entre 3 et 5 m de profondeur et leurs tombants. Ces eaux de faible profondeur confèrent au site sa principale originalité du point de vue fonctionnel en hébergeant une biomasse algale importante, qui en fait un site de forte productivité primaire. Son intérêt fonctionnel est accru par la présence récurrente de zones de forte concentration phytoplanctonique. Les zones rocheuses du site sont typiques des roches infralittorales de la façade atlantique. La limpidité du secteur permet le développement des Laminaires, notamment Laminaria hyperborea et L. ochroleuca, à des profondeurs exceptionnelles, puisqu'elles sont observées jusqu'à 40 m de profondeur. Cette zone constitue la limite sud de l'aire de répartition de certaines de ces algues. Cette zone est relativement peu connue du point de vue de la faune benthique et pélagique. Elle est toutefois fréquentée régulièrement par le Grand Dauphin (Tursiops truncatus) et le Marsouin commun (Phocoena phocoena) qui viennent s'y alimenter.
