Other Site Characteristics

Le site NATURA 2000 « Lac de Mouriscot » se situe sur les communes de Biarritz et Bidart, entre la route départementale 911 et la route nationale 10, à moins d'un kilomètre de l'océan. Il est inclus dans une coupure d'urbanisation assez marquée entre l'agglomération Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz et les communes du sud de la côte Basque. Il s'agit d'un site encaissé, comprenant le lac de Mouriscot et son marais, d'une surface de 33 ha sur une longueur d'environ 800 mètres. Il s'inscrit dans un vaste espace naturel d'environ 100 ha, véritable zone verte et paysagère entre les villes de Biarritz et Bidart. La principale menace est l'abandon de l'exploitation traditionnelle des marais qui se trouvent alors soumis à une dynamique de boisement spontané, entrainant la fermeture du milieu et la forte régression, voire la disparition, des habitats ouverts. De plus, l'enclavement du site au sein d'une agglomération qui s'est largment étendue la seconde moitié du siècle dernier, n'a pas permis à certaines espèces rares et sensibles de se maintenir : le Vison d'Europe a probablement disparu du site et la présence de la Cistude d'Europe est à confirmer.

Intérêt fort au niveau des habitats d'intérêt communautaire, assez faible au niveau des espèces. Il s'agit d'un site remarquable pour ses paysages. Il présente une haute valeur écologique pour la côte basque.
