Other Site Characteristics

Ce massif est situé au centre de l'Ariège. La juxtaposition de calcaires et de lherzolites (roches magmatiques ultrabasiques) confère à la zone une grande originalité tant sur le plan botanique que sur le plan de la géomorphologie des modelés de détail. Une grande diversité des milieux en résulte du fait de la situation de massif indépendant présentant toutes les expositions. Forte à la rupture de l'équilibre sylvo-pastoral.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le massif calcaire centro-ariégeois constitue une limite orientale pour bien des communautés centro-occidento pyrénéennes ainsi qu'une limite occidentale pour les communautés oro-méditerranéennes en versant Nord de la chaîne. Le secteur est particulièrement riche en endémiques pyrénéennes. Celles-ci sont pour la plupart inféodées à des milieux spécialisés. Une grande partie de la zone à vocation forestière originelle indéniable (résultats d'analyses polliniques faites sur une tourbière incluse dans le site) livrée historiquement au pâturage intensif et extensif, mais ce dernier est en nette régression de nos jours. Précision concernant les chiroptères : il est indiqué la présence du Grand Murin (Myotis myotis) et du Petit Murin (Myotis blythii) dans la rubrique espèces. En réalité, il n'est pas possible de dissocier ces deux espèces à vue. Il est donc plus juste de parler de la présence d'un complexe "Murins". La bryophyte d'intérêt communautaire, Hamatocaulis vernicosus est potentielle sur ce site et sa présence avérée doit être vérifiée lors de prospections en 2006.
