Other Site Characteristics
Au niveau géologique, la petite région de l'Astarac se présente comme un millefeuilles de dalles calcaires entrecoupées de couches marneuses (alluvions anciennes), découpé en coteaux par les rivières principales s'écoulant du Sud au Nord, comme la Lauze, ces coteaux étant eux-même re-découpés transversalement par les talwegs tracés par les cours d'eau affluents de ces rivières.
Le profil dissymétrique de ces coteaux, très typique, provient quant à lui de la période périglaciaire : le vent dominant d'ouest lié à l'accumulation de neige aux sommets des coteaux crée des corniches de neige soumises ensuite à des mouvements de solifluxion (glissement en masse du sol gorgé d'eau lors du dégel), provoquant un étalement de terres sur le versant Est, et entraînant progressivement une déportation du lit de la rivière vers l'Est. Celle-ci érode alors le versant exposé à l'Ouest, où apparaissent peu à peu des corniches calcaires.
Cette histoire géologique confère aux zones de coteaux un fort caractère répétitif entre vallées différentes et au sein d'une même vallée.
Ce sont les versants Est, érodés par les rivières et le vent d'Ouest, au relief le plus contrasté, et re- découpés par des cours d'eau secondaires, qui présentent une mosaïque de milieux variés et typés, selon que l'on est sur une partie marneuse, calcaire ou alluvionnaire, et en fonction de l'exposition. La vallée de la Lauze est celle du département où le caractère dissymétrique est le plus fort, et l'on y observe une forte variété de formations végétales et d'occupation du sol. Bois, landes sèches, prairies et cultures s'imbriquent en mosaïque.
Milieux à orchidées remarquables : tendance à la fermeture du milieu par recul du pâturage pour les pentes fortes ; tendance à la mise en culture des prairies humides par recul de l'élevage. |

Coteaux asymétriques du Haut-Gers occupés par un maillage bocager plus faiblement représenté dans le fond des vallées alluviales.
Etagement original de la végétation qui s'organise d'Est en Ouest sur les vallées selon l'ordre suivant :
- bois landes sec à chênes pubescents et garrides à Genista scorpius, Spartium junceum, Lavandula latifolia, Echinospartum horridum (Genista horrida)
- bas de versants plus humides sur sols de boulbennes en prairies ou boisées de chênes sessiles
- prairies bocagères et cultures en bords de rivières et sur le versant ouest
- boisements frais (chênes-hêtres) sur la pente du coteau ouest. |
