Other Site Characteristics

Le site correspond à deux entités de taille inégale sur deux communes et couvre environ 286 ha de mosaïque bocagère composée de plusieurs unités : prairies sèches de coteaux, prairies naturelles riches en fleurs, haies et vieilles forêts de hêtres, auxquelles s'ajoutent d'anciens bâtiments en pierre dont deux châteaux et leurs dépendances qui servent de refuge aux chauves-souris. A la charnière entre l'étage collinéen et montagnard, il est soumis à des influences océaniques. La géologie variée du site comprend notamment des affleurements argilo-calcaires, emplacements privilégiés de cortèges floristiques remarquables. Les menaces qui pèsent localement sur les pelouses sèches, les prairies riches en fleurs et le paysage bocager propice aux chauves-souris sont liées essentiellement à des modifications de pratiques agricoles, l'agriculture étant l'activité économique principale du site. Ces changements peuvent être de plusieurs natures : abandon de pâturage et de la fauche, déprise et enfrichement; ou au contraire intensification : labours et mise en culture, piétinement du bétail, fertilisation chimique, utilisation de pesticides, destruction de haies ou de bosquets. La gestion sylvicole est extensive avec des coupes de bois essentiellement à usage local mais les pratiques sylvicoles pourraient en cas d'évolution être une menace pour les hêtraies et forêts de pente remarquables où il serait souhaitable de ne pas intervenir pour favoriser une évolution naturelle avec présence de gros bois mort ou vivant. Le site est très peu urbanisé, les autres activités qui s'y pratiquent comme la chasse ou le tourisme lié à la randonnée sur les chemins existants et à l'attrait pour le patrimoine bâti du secteur ont peu ou pas d'impact sur la préservation du site. Cependant, l'artificialisation des terrains et une gestion non raisonnée des bords de route pourraient également menacer certains milieux présents à proximité des zones urbanisées.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les coteaux de Raulhac et de Cros-de-Ronesque présentent une très riche flore d'orchidées (habitat prioritaire) dans un ensemble calcicole d'altitude et abrite plusieurs espèces de chauves-souris protégées.
