Other Site Characteristics

Gîtes artificiels (2 granges, 1 château) correspondant à des gîtes de reproduction ou d'estivage. La superficie totale du site (territoire de chasse et de transit compris) représente 281 ha. Cette ZSC est répartie sur les communes de Fontanges, Saint-Paul-de-Salers et Saint-Martin-Valmeroux, dans la partie médiane de la vallée glaciaire de la Maronne. Le périmètre couvre essentiellement des parcelles agricoles (pour environ 75 % de la surface). composées en fond de vallée de prairies naturelles largement remaniées par les pratiques et la sélection végétale, la plupart étant fauchées (plusieurs coupes) maillées par un réseau discontinu ou à la physionomie altéré de haies et cordon boisé de la ripisylve. Sur les versants se rencontrent dès le bas des pentes des chaos d'éboulis éparses et plus rarement des falaises rocheuses, entre lesquels des zones de parcours en pâturage extensif cèdent le pas peu à peu devant des boisements de feuillus. Ces forêts sont assez peu exploitées, si ce n'est à une échelle familiale pour produire du bois de chauffage… Ces milieux forestiers et prairiaux qui représentent plus de 90% de la superficie du site constituent les habitats de chasse des chauves-souris. Le périmètre couvre également quelques hameaux (Le Theil, le Clédart) des fermes isolées (Fumel) et des bâtiments comme des granges d'altitude ainsi qu'un château médiéval dont les combles accueille la plus forte colonie de reproduction unitaire du Cantal pour le Petit Rhinolophe. La Loutre d'Europe est la seule autre espèce de l'Annexe II recensée sur le site. Sa présence est discrète. Les populations les plus notables fréquentent l'aval de la vallée. Des risques concernant la disparition de gîtes (par transformation de granges en logements; par transformation des combles ou obturation des entrées…) ou l'altération de territoires de chasse (arasement des corridors boisés, intensification des pratiques défavorables aux insectes proies…) sont perceptibles.
