Other Site Characteristics

Le site est constitué par le canyon formé par les rivières Vis et Virenque qui entaille les causses de Blandas et de Campestre. Il inclut le célèbre cirque de Navacelles. Il constitue ainsi un ensemble d'habitats naturels complexes d'une grande richesse, encore peu connu et donc moins vulnérable que certains autres sites plus prestigieux. La présence d'une usine hydroélectrique ancienne constitue le principal point noir dans cet ensemble. Milieux rocheux de gorges et d'éboulis avec des formations de taillis sans risques apparents pour le devenir des habitats naturels. Il existe des risques ponctuels sur la qualité de l'eau en aval de quelques villages de la vallée. Vulnérabilité des gîtes à chiroptères liée aux dérangements ce qui necessite des actions à mener (protection physiques des sites et sensibilisation du public). La gestion de la centrale hydroélectrique est également susceptible de présenter un risque pour les habitats liés à l'eau.

4.2 Quality and importance

Grand site régional qui entaille et sépare l'ensemble des grands causses méridionaux. Deux intérêts majeurs : -les habitats aquatiques et les ripisylves, avec six espèces de l'annexe II qui témoignent de la bonne qualité des eaux. C'est d'ailleurs un des rares sites régionaux où se trouvent des populations pures de la truite méditerranéenne (Salmo trutta fario), -les habitats de rochers avec des chauves-souris, et des suintements relevant du Cratoneurion, les pentes avec de grands éboulis et des pentes boisées de hêtraie calcicole.
