Other Site Characteristics

Au nord de Montpellier, le Pic Saint-Loup est l'un des points forts du paysage régional. Il se présente comme le flanc nord très redressé d'un pli déversé vers le nord et domine la cuvette de Saint-Martin-de-Londres. Le bassin plus frais et le pic Saint Loup offrent une conjonction d'habitats représentatifs de la région des garrigues du Montpelliérais. L'abandon des pratiques pastorales traditionnelles constitue l'une des principales menaces qui pèsent sur ce site par ailleurs très fréquenté par la population de l'agglomération montpelliéraine du fait de sa notoriété.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les grandes étendues de pelouses et de matorrals à genévrier oxycèdre, en particulier, sont caractéristiques d'une pratique séculaire du pastoralisme. Toutefois, les difficultés économiques de la filière ovine conduisent à une réduction continue du cheptel depuis plusieurs décennies avec de lourdes conséquences sur la conservation des milieux ouverts. Les falaises du Pic-Saint-Loup et de l'Hortus recèlent 3 espèces végétales endémiques (Erodium foetidum, Saxifraga cebennensis, Hieracium stelligerum). Les prairies humides de fauche du bassin sont réputées pour leur grand nombre d'orchidées dont une espèce endémique nouvellement décrite. La résurgence du Lamalou abrite plusieurs poissons d'intérêt communautaire. L'écrevisse à pattes blanches (Austropotamobius pallipes) était autrefois citée dans la résurgence, mais n'a pas été revue depuis plusieurs années. -Enfin, quelques espèces de chauves-souris sont notées sur ce site.
