Other Site Characteristics

Au sein de l'ensemble des zones humides de la côte languedocienne, l'étang de Thau est une lagune originale par sa profondeur et son alimentation en eaux douces et marines. Les activités agricoles et industrielles ainsi que le développement de l'urbanisation autour de l'étang constituent les principaux facteurs de déséquilibre de l'étang.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le site abrite de très vastes herbiers de zostères (Zostera marina et Zostera noltii) en très bon état de conservation. L'absence de marées et donc la présence constante d'une certaine épaisseur d'eau, évite aux zostères de geler, ce qui leur permet de se maintenir grâce à une reproduction par voie végétative. L'étang offre également d'importants secteurs de frayères. Les zones humides attenantes à l'étang présentent une grande diversité de milieux (sansouire, prés humides, marais salants, boisement, étendue d'eau saumâtre, vasière, roselière), et participent à l'intérêt majeur du site d'un point de vue écologique, faunistique et floristique.
