Other Site Characteristics

L'originalité du site est liée à sa situation particulière entre l'embouchure de l'Orb et la mer. Les massifs dunaires peu aménagés et d'un seul tenant sont devenus rares sur les côtes basses du Languedoc. Celui des Orpellières est remarquablement bien conservé et montre tous les faciès caractéristiques des dunes méditerranéennes ainsi que des sansouires et des prés salés. C'est là que se trouvent les plus hautes dunes des côtes languedociennes. Sensibilité du milieu dunaire au piétinement induit par la fréquentation touristique. Action forte des tempêtes entrainant une érosion de la côte et du milieu dunaire.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ensemble représentatif des côtes languedociennes avec un long cordon dunaire ininterrompu constitué de dunes blanches et de dunes grises, protégeant des prés salés (jonchaies, pannes dunaires, sansouires et localemenr des formations de steppes salées à Limonium ferulaceum, espèce qui se trouve ici en limite d'aire vers le nord). Plus en arrière des friches post-culturales en voie de recolonisation naturelle sont pâturées.
