Other Site Characteristics

Le Tech est l'un des plus importants fleuves côtiers des Pyrénées-Orientales. Le site concerne les cours moyen et aval du fleuve, la partie amont étant proposée au titre du domaine biogéographique alpin. Ce fleuve est caractérisé par un régime torrentiel très marqué, entrainant de fortes crues lors des épisodes pluvieux qui peuvent être intenses et subits. La vallée constitue un axe important de pénétration vers le massif pyrénéen, Andorre et l'Espagne. Elle accueille encore des activités industrielles (du fait des ressources énergétiques procurées par le fleuve) et thermales actives. La qualité de l'eau et les aménagements envisagés pour prémunir les lieux habités contre les crues du fleuve constituent des facteurs de vulnérabilité du site auxquels s'ajoute le développement de la fréquentation touristique sur cet axe majeur entre les stations littorales du Roussillon et la chaîne des Pyrénées.

4.2 Quality and importance

L'ensemble de ce réseau hydrographique est proposé pour le Barbeau méridional (Barbus meridionalis) qui présente une très grande variabilité génétique dans tout le bassin versant du Tech. Ce site aurait constitué un lieu de refuge pour l'espèce au moment des glaciations. Le haut du bassin est colonisé par le Desman des Pyrénées (Galymus pyrenaicus) endémique pyrénéo-cantabrique. Les individus y sont isolés et leur conservation est nécessaire. Ce site est un des derniers secteurs où la Loutre (Lutra lutra) est connue dans les Pyrénées-Orientales
