4.2 Quality and importance

La pointe de l'Espiguette est particulièrement connue dans la région pour l'importance de son gisement en sable. Constitué par les alluvions du Rhône et rabattus sur la côte par le courant Liguro-Provençal, fort sur ce site, ce gisement représente une entité écologique très particulière. L'hydrodynamisme local y est exceptionnel, ainsi que les peuplements de Tellines, Donax, Murex et autres habitants des fonds sableux dynamiques. Ce site représente le secteur le plus illustratif des sables dynamiques en Languedoc-Roussillon, avec les bancs à Amphioxus du Roussillon En complément du site FR9102013" Côte sableuse de l'infralittoral languedocien", ce site est proposé à l'inscription au réseau Natura2000 au titre de l'Habitat " Bancs de sable à faible couverture d'eau marine ". On retrouve sur ce site différents faciès de l'habitat 1110: les sables fins de haut niveau (1110-5)et les sables bien calibrés (1110-6). Les pêcheurs connaissent depuis longtemps la richesse biologique de ces habitats et y concentrent d'ailleurs une importante partie de leur exploitation. Ce site est dans doute l'un des plus intéressant de Méditerranée pour cet habitat, avec le site voisin de la pointe de Beauduc en région PACA. Le périmètre proposé englobe l'ensemble de la dune hydraulique immergée de l'Espiguette. Il se limite au nord à la Digue de l'Espiguette et l'entrée de Port-Camargue, à l'est à la limite géographique de la Région LR, en amont à la laisse de haute mer et en aval au pied de dune.
