Other Site Characteristics

The site belongs to the wet bio climatic layer with cold or very cold winters. It is characterized by the presence of metamorphic and sentimentary deposit rocks. Natural forests of the site are consisted of mixed and pure stands of Fagus and Quercus species. The dominant species of the Quercus forest is Quercus dalechampii which has its best natural range over the height of 300 m. At eastern part of the site and in lower levels the dominant species are Q. frainetto mixed with Q. cerris and Q. pubescens. Small stands of Populus tremula, Ilex aquifolium, Acer sp., Fraxinus sp. etc are found inside Fagus forest. Since 1960, many abandoned areas have been planted with P. nigra and P. radiata.

4.2 Quality and importance

Mixed forest of Fagus and Quercus species with rich flora and fauna characterize the site which has the most appreciable forest production in Evros region. Traditional agroforestry landscape is of great interest. They have also been recorded 11 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians of Annex ΙV, and a species of amphibian of Annex V.
