Other Site Characteristics

The site is part of South-East edge of Rodopi, partially overlapping with SPA GR1110002 "DASOS DADIAS - SOUFLI". It's a submountainous hilly area with intense and diverse landscapes. A great part of River Evros watershed crosses the area. The site consists of volcanic bedrocks and alluvial deposits. It belongs in sub mediterranean vegetation zone and is characterized by thermophile subcontinental broad-leaved oaks. The vegetation is composed by mixed stands of Pinus brutia, Pinus nigra, broad- leaved oaks and other broad-leaved species of mediterranean and submediterranean flora.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site has a significant ecological value because of a great number of bird species; many of them are rare in Europe. The area is an important biotope for many reptiles and birds as a result of site location; is a cross-road of bird migration and bird nesting. The site is composed of the forest complex of Dadia-Lefkimi-Souphli. The site consists of: 1) protected area for birds of prey (~7290 ha) 2) forest management area (silviculture, exploitation) (~19291 ha) 3) pasture areas on forest land, grasslands and agricultural areas (~15589 ha). Didimoticho cave: In the cave there have been found almost 500 to 3000 individuals of Miniopterus schreibersii species depending on the season, few tenths to hundreds individuals of Myotis blythii and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, as well as few tenths of Rhinolophus mehelyi. Furthermore there is a unique record of Plecotus austriacus. Kefalovouno cave: the cave hosts important colonies from spring to autumn, less in winter of the species: Myotis capaccinii, Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis blythii, Myotis myotis, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Rhinolophus mehelyi. Further more occasionally there have been found Myotis emarginatus, Rhinolophus euryale, Rhinolophus blasii, Myotis nattereri. It's one of the most important caves of northern Greece, as according to older publicated information and unpublished records ot the study team, is part of an underground network of refuge that is used by Myotis capaccinii and Miniopterus schreibersii at Thrace. Other refuges of this network are mines and caves or the site GR1110005, the Polifimos Maroneia cave (GR1130008), caves of Rhodopi as well as caves ot Thrace. Lyras river: it is an exceptionally important area since it it the only region where Cobitis puncticulata is found in Greece. Various studies in the area have shown that it is excepionaly rare (Zogaris et al. 2009) because it has never been found to any other place in Evros river or at riparian marshes of the area. In general the area is extremely rich in fish species, many of wich are protected by Habitats Directrive 93/43/EEC such as Aspius aspius, Cobitis strumicae etc
