Other Site Characteristics

The site consists mainly of metamorphic rocks, marbles (thought to be former reef limestones) and in river-bed of sedimentary rocks, alluvial deposits (recent fluviatile deposits). In the area there is the large gorge of Nestos river with steep rocky slopes. Also, there is found a well formed riparian forest stands or groups of Salix alba, S. fragilis, S. ampexicaulis, S. elaeagnos, Populus alba, P. nigra and sparse appearance (individually) of Platanus orientalis and Alnus glutinosa. From a geological point of view the region belongs to the Mass of Rodope. The climate is an intermediate climate type those of the Mediterranean and the continent.

4.2 Quality and importance

A very important site for breeding, passage and wintering raptors.
