Other Site Characteristics

Komsatos river has a great freshwater supply and provides Vistonida lake. A great quantity of sand gravel and silt is extracted every year. At the outlet of Komsatos river there are overgrazed and deteriorated riparian soft wood forests and an extensive cultivation of Populus sp. There are also hills (Kara Oglan) with grazed oak forest and steep valleys (especially the Komsatos river valley). Forest structure owes much to a history of grazing but there are also areas of dense ravine forest.

4.2 Quality and importance

It is part of one of the three important areas for birds of prey in Greece and species diversity is enriched by proximity of Vistonis wetlands. Traditional land uses contribute to the value of the area. The wetland under consideration either seems as one ecological unit along with lake Vistonis or by itself still has a great ecological value for Greece. Equally important is the presence of three species of reptiles and two amphibian species of Annex ΙΙ. They have also been recorded five species of reptiles and two amphibian species.
