Other Site Characteristics

The climate type is mediterranean to middle-european. The forests of the area mainly consist of mixed stands of Fagus sp.-Picea abies-Pinus sylvestris-Abies borisii-regis. There are small stands of Populus tremula and Betula pendula, especially on steep slopes (extreme site conditions). The final climax is mixed stands of Fagus sp.-Picea abies-Abies borisii-regis. Maximum tree age is 500 years, diameter is 1.20 m and height is 59 m for conifers and 45 m for Fagus sp. The steep slopes and the small streams form low waterfalls. The data given for the bats relate to a wider area than the Natura 2000 site (they refer to the sites GR1140001, GR1140002 and GR1140003 and the wider area of these).

4.2 Quality and importance

The most important ecological value of the site is the undisturbed ecosystem. This ecosystem is natural with a great ecological and silvicultural importance and it can be used as a model (pattern) for studying the dynamic evolution of other natural forest ecosystems. The site has a number of rare plant species (of the herbaceous vegetation) for Greece and Europe and is also characterized by a rich fauna in number and species. The total site is today 1072 ha of which 589 ha are under protection as SPA, 269 ha are protected after the decision of the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food and, finally, 214 ha are protected by the Forest District Office of Drama. Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of the invertebrates Limenitis populi, Limenitis camilla which are the southern edge of extension, the invertebrate Carcharodus flocciferus which is referred to Heath J. 1981. Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Council of Europe and the invertebrate Apatura iris which is contained to the Presidential Decree 67/1981.Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, one taxon is greek endemic, 2 taxa are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 2 taxa are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece and 4 taxa are Balkan endemics. There have also been recorded 2 species of reptiles and 4 amphibian species not listed in Annex II. The data given for the bats relate to a wider area than the Natura 2000 site (they refer to the sites GR1140001, GR1140002 and GR1140003 and the wider area of these)
