Other Site Characteristics

The site belongs to the over-moist bioclimatic layer with cold winters. It is characterized by the presence of acid siliceous and metamorphic rocks. The relief is of great diversity with mild and steep slopes. It represents one of the most mountainous parts of the Nestos river watershed and is characterized by many small and big streams with continuous flow, all year round. The forests of the area reflect the intensive forest practices. The forests consist of mixed and pure stands of Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Fagus moesiaca and other broad leaved species. The east part of the area consists of warmer vegetation types with stands of Quercus dalechampii, Q. frainetto and Pinus nigra.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is characterised by its rare flora and fauna. It represents the southest limit of the distribution of Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris and Fagus sylvatica. The "moor" areas found in the region are of great importance. The forests of Elatia are of the most important in Greece on a timber production point of view. The reference on Leuciscus cephalus is about the subspecies macedonicus. Concerning the wild plants, the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, 3 taxa are greek endemics, 2 taxa (Ranunculus fontanus, Viola stojanowii) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 4 taxa (Gentiana cruciata, Lilium martagon, Picea abies ssp. abies, Sambucus racemosa) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981), 2 taxa (Stachys officinalis, Trifolium spadiceum) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece, 4 taxa (Allium melanantherum, Asperula aristata ssp. Nestia, Cirsium appendiculatum, Genista tinctoria) are Balkan endemics and one taxon (Silene roemeri) finds its main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Italy. There have also been recorded 5 reptile species and 7 species of amphibians not listed in Annex II.
