Other Site Characteristics

The site consists mainly of crystalline-schist bed rock with igneous rocks (granites). This bed rock consists of metamorphic (crystalline) limestones of the marble series. The soil texture is sand-clay with adequate depth and fertility. In contrast, in the shrublands derived from degraded forests, the soil is poor. On the rocky limestone areas the forest cover is sparse and soil occurs only in crevices.

4.2 Quality and importance

This mountain has a concentration of many rare plants for Greece with restricted distribution. The rare plant communities on the cliffs of the peaks of Mount Falakro and the grasslands of the area are of great importance. They also form a wide multi-colour garden during May and June. There are rich forests of coniferous and broad leaved species on the lower altitudes. Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of the invertebrate Maculinea alcon which is refered to IUCN Conservation Monitoring Centre 1988. 1988 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals, the invertebrate Neptis sappho which is refered to Koomen P., van Helsdingen P.J. 1993. Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates. Council of Europe, the invertebrates Agrodiaetus nephohiptamenos, Everes decoloratus which are refered to Heath J. 1981. Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Council of Europe, the invertebrates Agrodiaetus admetus, Leptidea duponcheli, Agrodiaetus ripartii which are refered to the Presidential Decree 67/1981 and the invertebrate Pseudochazara orestes which is the southern edge of extension.Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, 2 taxa are greek endemics, one taxon is protected by the EC Environment Legislation (1992), 12 taxa (Androsace villosa, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Dactylorhiza sambucina, Dianthus petraeus ssp. orbelicus, Epipactis atrorubens, Gentiana cruciata, Haberlea rhodopensis, Nigritella nigra, Orchis ustulata, Paronychia rechingeri, Poa thessala, Saxifraga ferdinandi-coburgi) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981), 8 taxa (Hypericum rochelii, Minuartia doerfleri, Peucedanum officinale, Satureja pilosa, Saxifraga stribrnyi, Thesium alpinum, Valeriana montana, Valeriana officinalis ssp. collina) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece, 28 taxa are Balkan endemics (Asperula aristata ssp. nestia, Laserpitium siler ssp. laeve, Pedicularis orthantha, Sideritis scardica, Silene balcanica, Silene fabarioides, Silene radicosa ssp. radicosa) and 2 taxa (Saxifraga sempervivum, Thymus thracicus) find their main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey.
