Important site for the variety of vegetation and flora and for the composition of forest stands. Concerning the fauna the quality of the site is indicated by the occurence of the invertebrate Hipparchia delattini which is the southern edge of extension, the invertebrate Erebia ligea which is contained to the Presidential Decree 67/1981. The invertebrates Thecla betulae, Strymonidia w-album, Agrodiaetus damon which are refered to Heath J. 1981. Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Council of Europe, and the invertebrate Maculinea Alcon which is refered to IUCN Conservation Monitorin Centre 1988. 1988 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals.Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, 12 taxa are greek endemics (between them one is local endemic), one taxon is protected by the EC Environment Legislation (1992). Allium phthioticum, Aquilegia ottonis ssp. amaliae, Cynoglottis barrelieri ssp. serpentinicola, Dactylorhiza kalopissii, Festuca koritnicensis, Rosa arvensis, Viola eximia (motivation D) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list. Coeloglossum viride, Convallaria majalis, Dactylorhiza sambucina, , Gentiana asclepiadea, Gentiana cruciata, Gentiana lutea, Jovibarba heuffelii, Lilium chalcedonicum, Lilium martagon, Nigritella nigra, Orchis pallens, Poa thessala, Ramonda nathaliae (motivation D) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981). Myosurus minimus (motivation D) is rare in Greece and/or reach its extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece. Abies borisii-regis, Achillea chrysocoma, Achillea holosericea, Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. bulgarica, Arabis bryoides, Arenaria conferta ssp. confetra, Aurinia corymbosa, Campanula formanekiana, Centaurea pindicola, Cirsium appendiculatum, Crocus cvijicii, Dianthus integer ssp. minutiflorus, Paronychia macedonica, Peucedanum oligophyllum, Pinus heldreichii, Plantago media ssp. pindica, Sideritis scardica, Silene fabarioides, Silene radicosa ssp. radicosa, Stachys iva, Stachys plumosa, Viola orphanidis (motivation D) are Balkan endemics. Thymus leucotrichus, Thymus thracicus(motivation D) find their main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey or Italy. There have also been recorded seven species of reptiles and three amphibians of Annex IV. |
