Other Site Characteristics

It is a gorge of Aliakmonas river with cliffs. After the amplification of the river banks the Polyphyton lake was created.

4.2 Quality and importance

It is an important area for birds of prey providing feeding, nesting and refuge habitats. It also provides wintering habitats for migratory bird species and consists a migratory flyway. In the present site Onobrychis aliacmonia, considered as an extinct plant species in WCMC and European Red Data list, has been rediscovered recently. This plant is a very rare, local endemic.
