Other Site Characteristics

1. Area Kalochori and Gallikos River estuary including crops and ecosystems with low herbaceous vegetation ( wet meadows ) . 2. Area of River Loudias, namely an area of approximately 1 km2 which spans along the river Loudias north of Athens highway - Thessaloniki that is occupied by meadows . 3. Area north of Axioupolis including hilly land with oak - forests and crops, areas with riparian forest along the Axios river in very good condition.

4.2 Quality and importance

(1) Specifically, the colony of the species Spermophilus citellus of Kalochori area hosts about one- quarter of the registered European ground squirrel burrows, making it as one of the most important colonies Moreover , the extent of the current colony surrounded by suitable habitat areas (estuaries Gallikos region ). (2) This area is occupied by pastures in excellent state of preservation and is an ideal European ground squirrel habitat in an area where similar quality available habitat is extremely scarce . In the region it can be found 4 European ground squirrel burrows, but talks with local farmers revealed that in recent years the species was much more common. (3) North of SAC (up to the Bridge Kochi Dere) three bat species of Annex II have been found (Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis myotis) and another species of Annex IV of Directive 92/43 / EC (Pipistrellus kuhlii, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Pipistrellus pygmaeus).d a t Rhinolophus hipposideros, sµat psµ t (65 tµa pep) e ßee se d eataeeµµa ta ßea t p.
