4. SITE DESCRIPTION

Other Site Characteristics

An inland saline lake with no floating or submerged vegetation other than algae. The salinity of waters is due to the presence of volcano sedimentary rocks in the area and to intense evaporization taking place during Neogene period. An important halophytic vegetation, dominated by Puccinelia convoluta and classified according to the characteristic species (Crypsis aculeata, Suaeda maritima, Camphorosma annua, Plantago coronopus, Limonium gmelinii, Spergularia nicaeensis, Elymus elongatus) to various associations, occur in the immediate vicinity of the lake. Also, scattered reed bed formations with Phragmites australis occur at the margins of the lake.

4.2 Quality and importance

This an important site for breeding, passage and wintering waterbirds, and also for raptors. Species of concern include: Falco naumanni. As an inland saline lake, Pikrolimni is unique in Greece. It supports an interesting halophytic vegetation with a structure remarkably differentiated from that of coastal one, probably due to the fact that salinity of lake water (NaCl, Na2CO3, Na2SO4) differs from that of marine water.
