Other Site Characteristics

It is an artificial freshwater lake (reservoir), largely overgrown with emergent vegetation, with locally extensive reedbeds along the shores and within the water of the lake (Dominant vegetation of Phragmites australis). Lake Agras is water dependent from the Vegoritida lake and the Boras river. Consequently, it is strongly affected by their pollution and eutrophication. The water of the lake is used by the hydroelectric station of Public Electricity Enterprise (DEH) as an energy resource for the nearby villages. Free-floating vegetation is collected by a flood-gate.

4.2 Quality and importance

There are many feeding, nesting, breeding, wintering and refuge habitats for bird species. The site is moderately degraded due to human activities. However, it hosts suitable habitats (large still water bodies, lakes, riparian refugia) for the freshwater species (Austropotamobius torrentium) that should be present there. The species was not found. There have also been recorded six reptile species and two amphibian species of Annex IV.
