Other Site Characteristics

Kerkini is a large artificial freshwater lake fed by the Strymonas river and used for irrigation and flood control. Within the lake area there is the well forested inland delta of Strymonas river. The forested delta is a reproduction colony of several birds species. It is surrounded by well forested mountains (Beles, Kroussia). Kerkini lake supports a very interesting aquatic vegetation including formations of rooted plants with floating leaves (Trapa natans, Nymphaea alba, Nymphoides peltata, Potamogeton gramineus) or rooted submerged, species ( Ranunculus fluitans, Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum spicatum etc). Reed bed formations dominated by Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, Typha domingensis, Scirpus lacustris etc. fringe the lake and canals. Several trees isolated or in small groups of Tamarix spp. grow sporadically around the lake. The site GR1260001 LIMNI KERKINI - KROUSIA - KORYFES OROUS BELES, ANGISTRO – CHAROPO are overlapping the site, GR1260008 TECHNITI LIMNI KERKINIS - OROS KROUSIA, occupy the 100% of the site and also the site GR1260010 OROS BELES which occupy either 100%.

4.2 Quality and importance

Area with wetland and mountain ecosystems of great national and international importance. It supports rich bird populations in terms of both number and diversity, including rare and endangered species. The wetland is very important as a feeding ground for birds of prey nesting in the nearby forests, as a wintering and intermediate station for migratory birds, as well as a breeding area for a large number of birds. The increased biological productivity and the existence of rare plant species and also rare and diverse fauna (fishes, mammals, amphibians, reptiles) increase even more the ecological value of the site. The reference on Leuciscus cephalus is about the subspecies macedonicus. Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of other important taxa. Among them, some taxa are greek endemics and some other taxa are protected by the EC Environment Legislation (1992). Minuartia saxifraga, Viola stojanowii (motivation D) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list, 11 taxa (Atropa bella - donna, Dactylorhiza incarnata, Dianthus petraeus ssp. orbelicus, Himantoglossum hircinum, Jovibarba heuffelii (motivation D) are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981). Crepis conyzifolia, Ornithogalum bucheanum, Peucedanum aequiradium, Peucedanum officinale, Stachys officinalis (motivation D) are rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece. Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Cirsium appendiculatum, Erysimum drenowskii, Genista tinctoria, Silene balcanica, Silene waldsteinii, Stachys plumose (motivation D) are Balkan endemics. Thymus thracicus (motivation D) find their main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey or Italy.
