Other Site Characteristics

The site comprises coastal saltwater lagoons and marshlands formed around the mouth of Strymon river. The Delta region contains a variety of habitat types: off shore sand, islands and dunes, salt marshes, Tamarix shrub, grassland of freshwater marshes and reed beds along the river. There are not dykes to separate the wetland from reclaimed agricultural land, on which the principal crops are wheat, vines and olives. There are villages and towns near the wetland.

4.2 Quality and importance

The estuary of river Strymon is considered an important area for breeding and wintering of large bird population (waders and gulls) as well as for a very rich number of fish. It is also an important area for rare and threatened waterfowls, a principal migratrory route and a recovery station. Delta ecosystems are still intact. It is important as passage for migrants, particularly waders and gulls. The reference on Platycnemis pennipes is about the subspecies Platycnemis pennipes pennipes. The protection of dragonflies (Odonata) and their biotopes. Council of Europe. The site is moderately degraded due to human activities. However, it hosts suitable habitats (large still water bodies, lakes, swamps) for the Odonata species (Lindenia tetraphylla) that should be present there. The species was not found during the field. They have also been recorded four species of Annex IV reptiles, one amphibian species of Annex V.
