Other Site Characteristics

A small but important wetland with a brackish coastal lagoon, a well developed dune system, halophile vegetation and sandy heathland. Corydothymus capitatus dominated formations mostly characteristic of south Greece and the islands form an important habitat, incorporated in the dune system. Also, clusters of Spartium junceum, Holoschoenus vulgaris or Tamarix spp. are scattered in the area. Reed beds with Phragmites australis, of limited extent, cover parts of saline soils often with a stratum of halophilus species. Chara and Zannichelia beds develop at the bottom of the lagoon.

4.2 Quality and importance

The wetland is used as a breeding, feeding and wintering area by a large number of birds. It is also important for other fauna species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians). In the present site, Pancratium maritimum is growing wild; this plant species is seriously endangered by the human activities on the coast. They have also been recorded one reptile species and one amphibian species of Annex IV.
