Other Site Characteristics

Mountain Stratonikon is a forested branch of Cholomon mountain. In this area a lot of vegetation types are found. The dense forests consist of broadleaved deciduous species (Castanea sativa, Quercus frainetto, Q. dalechampii and Fagus sp) and broad-leaved evergreen woodland (Quercus ilex).

4.2 Quality and importance

It is an important area because of variety of forest habitat types. These forests are very suitable for breeding birds of prey. The absence of villages and agriculture inside the site is absolute. Native wildlife can be made a perceptible component of the forest scene by creating favourable habitats for birds and other small animals at roadside parks, rest areas and pic-nic sites. For larger species such habitats could be created in glades, marshes or forest openings visible from the road. The principal, commercial wood products of the Mt. Stratonikon, are coming from beech, oaks and chestnut. They have also been recorded three reptile and three amphibian species of Annex IV.
