Other Site Characteristics

Two rocky mountains, densely vegetated with Oaks and other broadleaved trees. There is also Black Pine (P.nigra) forest and few abandoned fields. The area is characterised by Venetikos River and the abundance of cliffs.

4.2 Quality and importance

The presence of the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) whose breeding numbers and distribution in Greece have been greatly reduced is very significant. Other birds of prey of interest include the Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) and the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus). There is also a significant number of breeding Black Storks (Ciconia nigra). Black Storks are threatened by the construction of small dams in mountain valleys, and the subsequent destruction of their feeding habitats (small rivers and streams).
