Other Site Characteristics

Mount Vourinos consists of two dinstinct geological substrates: calcareous and serpentine. The calcareous substrate exists on the whole NE slope and part of the NW slope, whereas the serpentine substrate is found in less extent in the SW slope. The mountain has two parallel ridges formed by several peaks. The direction of the ridges is NW-SE. Between them lies the Valley of Mesiano Nero (400 ha) which is the key feature for nature conservation in the site. In the valley of Messiano Nero human activities such as grazing, forestry as well as hunting, have been kept sustained since several decades. Access to the area is quite difficult.

4.2 Quality and importance

Although the mountain is not of great height it has a rich flora of considerable taxonomic and phytogeographical interest. The distinct geological substrates of Mt. Vourinos create a rich flora of considerable taxonomic and phytogeographical interest. Vourinos has some endemic species and subspecies of plants. Messiano Nero Valley, being protected from human activities during the last three decades, concentrates the botanical, zoological, ecological and landscape importance of the site. Concerning the wild growning plants the quality of the site is indicated by the occurrence of many important taxa. Inula ensifolia, Sempervivum ciliosum (motivation D) are included in the WCMC and/or European Red Data list. Dactylorhiza sambucina, Lilium chalcedonicum, Lilium martagon, Poa thessala (motivation D)are protected by the Greek Presidental Decree (67/1981). Genista hassertiana (motivation D) is rare in Greece and/or reach their extreme distribution limits in Northern Greece Abies borisii-regis, Achillea chrysocoma, Anthyllis vulneraria L. ssp. bulgarica, Asperula aristata ssp. nestia, Astragalus mayeri, Laserpitium siler ssp. laeve, Marrubium thessalum, Minuartia garckeana, Paronychia macedonica, Pinus heldreichii, Silene radicosa ssp. radicosa (motivation D) are Balkan endemics. Anthyllis vulneraria ssp. hispidissima, (motivation D) finds its main distribution area in the Balkan Peninsula extending also to Turkey or Italy.. They have also been recorded seven reptile species and one amphibian species of Annex IV , as well as other two species of reptiles and amphibians.
