3. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Back to top3.1 Habitat types present on the site and assessment for them
No habitat types are reported for the site
3.2 Species referred to in Article 4 of Directive 2009/147/EC and listed in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC and site evaluation for them
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, I = Invertebrates, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
- Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)
3.3 Other important species of flora and fauna (optional)
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, Fu = Fungi, I = Invertebrates, L = Lichens, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- CODE: for Birds, Annex IV and V species the code as provided in the reference portal should be used in addition to the scientific name
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting, (see reference portal)
- Cat.: Abundance categories: C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present

Other Site Characteristics
An inaccessible rugged mountain chain with high cliffs it the western part. The valleys of Kalama and Acheronta are included. At the northern part of the site there is the magnificent gorge of the Kalamas River, the slopes of which are densely covered with mixed broad-leaved deciduous and schlerophylous vegetation with Carpinus orientalis, Fraxinus ornus, Ulmus campestris, Celtis australis, Colutea arborescens, Ceratonia siliqua, Pistacia lentiscus, Cotinus cogygria, Quercus pubescens, Q. frainetto, Q. ilex, Q. coccifera, Acer monspessulanum, Phillyrea media, Hedera helix, Clematis flammula, Cornus mas, etc. The presence of Olea europaea and Pistacia lentiscus is noticeable along with the appearance of other characteristic species of the Thermo-Mediterranean vegetation belt in the deciduous zone of the Meso-Mediterranean vegetation belt. Within the site, occurs a riparian forest with Platanus orientalis, Salix alba, S. cinerea and Alnus glutinosa. Stands of Scirpus holoschoenus and Carex sp. grow along the river near the water. The area Stena of the Acherontas River is located at the southern edge of the site, and consists of calacreous rocks where maquis vegetation with the dominant species of Quercus coccifera, Phillyrea latifolia, etc., is predominant. The arborescent and scrub vegetation participate in higher and lower cover percentages, respectively. The chasmophytic vegetation which is composed of ecologically and phytogeographically interesting taxa, grows on calcareous rocks of high inclinations in the gorge, thus giving special ecological value to the studied site. The well-structured riparian vegetation is composed of the following dominant species: Platanus orientalis, Salix alba, Alnus glutinosa, etc. |
4.2 Quality and importance
The site is of great importance for raptors. The vegetation of the slopes of the Kalamas gorge is in very good ecological condition. The deciduous woodland comprises various tree species and the composition of the maquis vegetation is representative of the habitat types which occur at these altitudes. |
