Other Site Characteristics

Zagori is a mountainous area, surrounded by Tymphi, Mitsikeli and Mavrovounimountains. Mitsikeli (Oros Mitsikeli) is a long and narrow mountain situated inthe central part of the Ioannina Prefecture. It begins south of Mt. Timfi andextends northwestwards to southeastwards to Mt. Driskos, dominating the IoanninaLake. Its highest peak has an altitude of 1810 m. Many springs flow fromMitsikeli and feed the Ioannina lake. At the eastern side of Mitsikeli extensiveformations dominated by characteristic species of Ostryo-Carpinion and Quercionfrainetto, such as Ostrya carpinifolia, Carpinus orientalis, Fraxinus ornus,Quercus pubescens, Corylus sp., Acer sp. etc., occur. In the higher altitudesstands of Abies borisii-regis appear.

4.2 Quality and importance

This site is very important for many rare and endangered raptor species, most notably the Egyptian Vulture and the Golden Eagle. Both species have suffered from illegal shooting, poisoning and lack of food and their numbers have been reduced greatly. Especially the Egyptian Vulture is on the brink of extinction inmany areas. Other species found is the Booted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Honey Buzzard and Peregrine Falcon. Other species of concern include the Black Stork, Eagle Owl, Black Woodpecker, Red-backed Shrike, Quail and Woodlark.Illegal shooting and use of poisoned baits have greatly affected raptor populations. Cutting of large trees is also a potential threat (there's an incident of cutting a tree with a Golden Eagle nest), while increased disturbance by visitors is another threat that is expected to intensify in the next years. The removal of large trees is also threatening forest species like the Black Stork and Black Woodpecker.
