Other Site Characteristics

From a geological point of view, the mountain range of Panaitoliko is composed of limestones and flyschs and its arch-shaped ridge constitutes the natural limits between the prefectures of Aitoloakarnania and Evrytania. The presence of minor west, south-west and southerly exposed peaks with gradually inclining slopes accordingly to the altitude, gives the examined site a special mountainous multifarious relief (a dense hydrographic network, alternating high peaks and deep gorges, as well as the presence of many torrents). As a result, forest vegetation exists on slopes of all exposures. The dominant coniferous taxa of the mountainous forests covering extended areas between 700-1600m altitude is Abies cephalonica, whilst locally on north-exposed slopes Abies borisii-regis is observed with a low frequency of occurrence. Degraded scrubs with evergreen, sclerophyllous vegetation are distributed altitudinally from 600 to 800m, as a consequence of human activities. Quercus ilex, Q. coccifera and Juniperus oxycedrus are the dominant species, whilst in the structure of phryganic communities various species of the genera Cistus, Rosa and Origanum, etc. are abundant. The broadleaved deciduous forests are composed of Quercus pubescens, Q. frainetto and Q. ithaburensis subsp. macrolepis all occurring within the maquis vegetation or at transitional zones between the evergreen vegetation and the coniferous forests within the structure of the above the timberline vegetation calcareous cliff communities and open, stepped rocky grasslands exist, giving a special aspect to the landscape. Scattered populations of Juniperus foetidissima occur close to the timberline.

4.2 Quality and importance

The presence of broad-leaved deciduous forests with Quercus frainetto and Q. pubescens, in combination with the great areas covered by coniferous forests with Abies cephalonica give special ecological importance to the mountainous ecosystems of Panaitoliko. The broad-leaved deciduous forests, although rather degraded, constitute a special ecological ingredient to this mountain, especially as their area is continuously declining in Central and Southern Greece. Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. bulgarica which has been included in the Other Important Species with motivation D, due to its scattered populations in the examined site and its distribution in the Balkan peninsula (Balkan endemic).
