Other Site Characteristics
Mt. Chelmos is located in Northern Peloponnisos and is characterized by a variety of geological substrata and soil types (conglomerates, limestones of Olonos-Pindos zone, flysh). The main elements of its "wild" landscape include: well forested slopes of the Meso- and Supra-Mediterranean vegetation zone with Abies cephalonica and Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana forests, steep calcareous cliffs, the Mavrolimni lake (2050 m) of glacier origin (this is the only "alpine" lake of Peloponnisos) and the impressive Styx valley associated with a small, wet cave and a waterfall at its base. Erosion of limestone has mainly contributed to the formation of a strong relief with steep calcareous cliffs and screes. The closed, dense grasslands with Trifolium parnasii (Trifolion parnassi) and Alopecurus gerardi of the Mountain- and Oro-Mediterranean vegetation zones participate in the formation of a vegetation complex clearly differentiated into four major vegetation types (open stepped grasslands, calcareous cliffs, calcareous screes and dense, closed grasslands). Forests of good structure characterized by a more diverse flora are present on the eastern slopes of Mt. Chelmos compared with the northern slopes. |
4.2 Quality and importance
The concentration of a high number of Greek and local endemics many of which belong to one of the IUCN RED DATA BOOK categories, in addition to a species belonging to the priority species listed on Annex II of Council Directive 92/43/EEC, contributes to the promotion of the ecological value of this landscape which is also characterized by geomorphological features of special interest and importance. From the Other Important Species of Flora listed in section 3.3, the following taxa are included with motivation D, for the reasons mentioned below. Acantholimon echinus: Interesting distribution pattern since it is disributed as concerns Greece only on limestone. Mountains of continental Greece (Peloponnisos) as well as Samos and Chios (Aegean islands) extending to W Anatolia. Aster alpinus: A variable species widespread in mountains of C and S Europe and C, SW Asia, distributed only on Mts Chelmos and Killini in Southern Greece. Euphorbia capitulata: A rare species endemic to the Balkan Peninsula (Former Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria and Greece). Chelmos is the only locality in Southern Greece where this species occurs. Hammatolobium lotoides: It shows a fragmentary distribution area since it occurs on Greek Mts (Chelmos, Taygetos, Menalon, Tragovouni) and S. Turkey. Moreover to the above mentioned taxa incorporated in Motivation D, some comments must be made on the geographical distribution of the rest species which belong to the following categories: a) Balkan endemics: Poa thessala, Lilium chalcedonicum, Minuartia stellata, Acer heldreichi, Dianthus integer subsp. minutiflorus, Arenaria cretica, Arenaria conferta subsp. conferta, Tulipa orphanidea. B) Species distributed in the Balkan peninsula and Anatolia: Acanthollimon echinus subsp.echinus, Anthemis cretica subsp. cretica, Arenaria filicaulis subsp. graeca, Saponaria chlorifolia, Achillea fraasii, Galium incanum subsp. incanum. C) The remaining species present an interesting distribution range. Some of the above mentioned species are incorporated in one of the IUCN Red Data Book categories (WCMC 1993): Allium phtioticum, Aquilegia ottonis subsp. ottonis, Solenanthus stamineus). More precisely two small mammals, Dryomys nitedula wingei and Cricetulus migratorius are threatened animals included in the lists of the Greek Red Data Book as "Rare" and Endangered respectively (motivation A). All Other Important taxa, except the hamster Cricetulus migratorius, are protected by the Bern Convention and therefore marked with motivation C. The same motivation is additionally given to the wildcat Felis silvestris since it is also protected by the CITES Convention. Apart from the lizard Ablepharus kitaibelii, the snakes Typhlops vermicularis and Vipera ammodytes, the hare Lepus europaeus and the carnivores Vulpes v. hellenica, Martes foina, M. meles and Felis silvestris, all the remaining taxa of section 3.3 are included in the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981, thus obtaining motivation D.Ablepharus kitaibelii, the snake Coronella austriaca and the wildcat Felis silvestris, the D motivation is additionally given to these taxa since they are included in the handbook of the CORINE-Biotopes Project. Moreover, the same motivation characterizes the lizard Podarcis taurica ionica, Dryomys nitedula wingei because they are Balkan endemics. Felis silvestris is eligible for motivation D since the former has a very broken distribution area in Greece, and the other two are generally very rare in Greece. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation C are protected by the Bern Convention. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation D are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981. Anthocharis damone, Heodes alciphron, Thersamonia thetis are also included in the IUCN Red List. Pieris ergane is also included in the "Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates". Saturnia pyri is protected by the IUCN Red List and the European Red List of Globally Threatened Animals and Plants and it is included in the "Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates". Elphistonia charlonia are included in the list of "Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. |
