Other Site Characteristics

From a geological point of view, the area is mainly characterized by limestone. Flysch and alluvial formations also occur but to a lesser extent. The area is more or less even with small inclinations surrounded by the abrupt hill formations of Mt. Aroania.Formations of evergreen broad-leaved species cover the majority of the area, with the dominant species being Quercus coccifera and Juniperus oxycedrus and phrygana communities with species such as Sarcopoterium spinosum and Phlomis fruticosa. These are degraded communities due to human activities observed in the area. Abandoned fields are noticable and here the phrygana and macchia vegetation gradually develop in a process of natural succession.

4.2 Quality and importance

The evergreen sclerophylous vegetation of the area in combination with the occurrence of the Castria cave, make the area of a significant ecological, ecotourist and educational importance. Therefore, the protection and conservation of Abies cephalonica forest as a main element of this site is required.Although the site's fauna is moderately diverse, its importance is appreciated. The stream frog Rana graeca, and the lizard taxa listed in the section 3.3 are evaluated as Other Important Species. The lacertid lizard Podarcis peloponnesiaca is a Greek taxon endemic to Peloponnisos. All these taxa receive C and D motivations since they have been protected by the Bern Convention and the Greek Presidential Decree, respectively.
