Other Site Characteristics

Mt. Chelmos is located in Northern Peloponnisos and is characterized by a variety of geological substrata and soil types (conglomerates, limestones of Olonos-Pindos zone, flysh). The main elements of its "wild" landscape include: well forested slopes of the Meso- and Supra-Mediterranean vegetation zone with Abies cephalonica and Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana forests, steep calcareous cliffs, the Mavrolimni lake (2050 m) of glacier origin (this is the only "alpine" lake of Peloponnisos) and the impressive Styx valley associated with a small, wet cave and a waterfall at its base. Erosion of limestone has mainly contributed to the formation of a strong relief with steep calcareous cliffs and screes. The closed, dense grasslands with Trifolium parnasii (Trifolion parnassi) and Alopecurus gerardi of the Mountain- and Oro-Mediterranean vegetation zones participate in the formation of a vegetation complex clearly differentiated into four major vegetation types (open stepped grasslands, calcareous cliffs, calcareous screes and dense, closed grasslands). Forests of good structure characterized by a more diverse flora are present on the eastern slopes of Mt. Chelmos compared with the northern slopes. Vouraikos gorge is situated in the northern part of Peloponnisos. It is positioned between Mt. Aroania (Chelmos) and the eastern parts of Mt. Panachaiko. The Vouraikos river, which has shaped this steep-sided, deep gorge flows from the mountains of Kalavryta. The gorge begins about 3 km south of the village of Kato Zachlorou and runs parallel to the river, which enters the sea close to the coastal city of Diakofto. A railway leading from Diakofto to Kalavryta runs through the gorge. Many streams enter the river, along its course, the main one being Avrigiolaka, which flows from the village of Mamousia. The gorge is very narrow in several places, while in others it is wider.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is still rich in birds of prey, even though the Griffon Vulutre (Gyps fulvus) that once nested is extinct. There are still Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and Short-toed Eagles (Circaetus gallicus), as well as Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) etc. This area is one of the most important for the Rock Partridge, its population being still healthy and communicating with other populations in the broader area. Other species of interest include the Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) with at least 6 breeding pairs, the White-backed Woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos) which is restricted to high altitude old fir forests, the Woodlark (Lullula arborea) and the Tawny Pipit (Anthus campestris) and the Alpine Swift (Apus melba). Vouraikos river suffers from household and industrial waste disposal, while a large part of the forests along its route was burnt recently.
