Other Site Characteristics

The site contains the lakes Yliki and Paralimni and the springs Piges ton Chariton connected by the river Voiotikos Kifissos that runs into Yliki. The mountains around the lakes are basically bare. The rest of the surrounding area is part of the plain of the now drained lake Kopais and is cultivated land. Kifissos has been canalised where it drains the plain. Around Paralimni there are some small vineyards. Before 1993, lake Paralimni could have been described by the habitat type 3150 of Directive 92/43/EEC (with Parvapotamion, Corine code 22.422, and not with Magnopotamion). The species characterizing the vegetation are: Potamogeton crispus, P. nodosus, Ceratophyllum demersum, Miriophyllum spicatum. Habitat type 3280 describes the characteristic vegetation of a constantly flowing Mediterranean river with Paspalo-Agrostidion and hanging curtains of Salix alba and populus alba. Viotikos Kifissos has this characteristic vegetation, but without constantly running waters. Habitat type 3170 describes an area with the species Cyperus fuscus, Crypsis alopecuroides and Menta pulegium. 5332 is used to describe low -not exceeding 1 m-, sparsely covereddiss-dominated Quercus coccifera garrigue (not including the species Ampelodesmus).

4.2 Quality and importance

The area has the following endemic species of fish: Scardinius graecus, endemic to the lakes; Barbus graecus endemic to the region; Rutilus beoticus, Rutilus ylikiensis endemic to Greece. Barbus graecus and Rutilus ylikiensis are considered locally threatened. Here lives a genetically differentiated population of the dice snace Natrix tesselata. Kifissos river is an important site for the presence of otters, Lutra lutra. The caves around the lake Yliki have an endemic species of Coleoptera, Laemostenus vignai. In the area around Orhomenos (Dionysos) an endemic species of Orthoptera Dolichopoda vandeli is present. The two lakes and the rivers Voiotikos Kifissos and Melas form a continuous system of inland waters. As a wetland the lakes Yliki and Paralimni are nowadays less important although they are considered EC important bird areas and have some raptor species as well. It is also the southernmost nesting area of storks in Greece. The lake Paralimni was completely drained in 1993 due to the draught and a significant part of it is presently cultivated. The remaining underground water is pumped off for the irrigation of the nearby cultivations and also used for the water supply of Chalkida. Provided that the waters of Paralimni will be left to recover and resume their former status the area could still retain its previous significance for migratory birds. Lake Yliki is used for the water supply of Athens and Paralimni for the water supply of Chalkida.Sink Aliartos: the Cave during the warm months of the year hosts parent colony of approximately 3000 individuals of the species Myotis blythii, Myotis myotis and Miniopterus schreibersii. In winter there have been observed a few individuals of the species Rhinolophus blasii, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Rhinolophus hipposideros.
