Other Site Characteristics

The site is located at the northern edge of Euboea (Evvoia) island. The site includes the lagoons Megalo Livari, Strongylo and Mikro Livari, the estuary of Xirias (Kalas) River and Agios Nikolaos deciduous forest (designated as Natural Monument). This forest owned by the Church and two others near Megalo Livari are remnants of an once extended riverine forest which has nowadays been restricted because of logging and expansion of cultivation. The lagoons contain brackish water and their fresh water originates from springs and small streams. They are surrounded by cultivated fields.Megalo Livari was extensively exploited in the past for fish production, but digging, landfilling, and changes of the orifice have been conducted for the intensification of fish culture. Road construction, habitation and tourism activities are extended towards the lagoon. In addition, a fish hatchery was constructed at the northern edge of the lagoon. The conservation status of the wetland vegetation around the lagoon, of the reedbeds and the riverine forest has seriously deteriorated. Halophilous vegetation is also present. Mikro Livari lagoon is a private area where drainage works have been done. Also, roads were constructed near Mikro Livari and Strongylo. Marsh and reedbeds surround the lagoons, and sand beach and sand dunes extend along coastal zone of the site. Xirias river has an intermittent flow. NOTES: * Reed beds (Phragmites australis), another habitat type not included in Annex I of Directive 92/43/EEC, are present in the site.

4.2 Quality and importance

The following elements indicate the ecological quality and importance of the site:1) It is one of the few wetlands of eastern continental Greece.2) The great variety of existing habitat types.3) It is important for migrating and wintering birds, especially for the mute swan (max 1,600i), the flamingo (max 550i), the spoonbill, the glossy ibis, ducks, herons and waders.4) It supports an isolated population of river otter (Annex I of Dir. 92/43), the most important site for the species in Euboea.5) The presence of small riverine forests (one of them has been declared as a Natural Monument).6) The great variety of herpetofauna.
