Other Site Characteristics

The site includes the mountains of Central Evvoia: Dirfys, Xyrovouni, Skoteini, Mavrovouni, Ortari and the area of Kymi, including Prasouda islet. It is a mountainous area covered mostly by broadleaved evergreen scrub, phrygana and cultivations in lower altitudes, pine and fir forests in middle altitudes, as well as Swett chestnut woodland, and meadows in the peaks.

4.2 Quality and importance

This area is very important for a number of birds of prey. Although the colony of Griffon vultures that existed in the past is exinct and the Golden Eagle hasn't been recorded in the past few years, species like the Bonelli's Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Honey Buzzard, Long-legged Buzzard. Lanner Falcon and Peregrine Falcon nest in significant numbers. Furthermore, Eagle Owls are also found in significant numbers, as well as Cretzschmar's Buntings. Finally, the Prasouda islet is one of the only two sites in Greece that the Storm Petrel (a seabird that we know very little about its distribution and status in Greece) has been recorded nesting.
