4.2 Quality and importance

River Manikiatis. Only place of distribution for Barbus euboicus, both in Greece and worldwide, one of the most rare and vulnerable endemic fish species in the country (Barbieri et al. 2015). In the area there is a second fish species (Squalius sp. Evia) wich is also local endemic (Kottelat, & Freyhof, 2007) and genetic isolated population (Geiger et al. 2014). The site includes the main part of known distribution of Barbus euboicus, from the estuary of Manikiatis river up upstream of the village Neochori and until Lokas village, referring to stream Kolethra, branch of the river. during summer the species populations suffer due to lack of water.
