4. SITE DESCRIPTION

4.1 General site character

Habitat class % Cover

Total Habitat Cover

Other Site Characteristics

The area contains the gorge and its fringes. The gorge is very deep, 1500 km, with very steep slopes, which make it practically inaccessible. The gorge has 2km length. The substrate is calcareous with local patches of chasmophytes. Along the gorge runs an intermittently (seasonaly) flowing river. The fringes are covered by maquis and phrygana.

4.2 Quality and importance

The main importance of the area lies on that, due to its geomorphological structure and inaccessibility, it is naturally protected and offers a refuge to the vultures, especially for the golden eagle and chamois.

4.3 Threats, pressures and activities with impacts on the site
