Other Site Characteristics

The lagoon of Moustos is a wetland dominated by the main lagoon. Smaller lagoons and salt marshes extend to the north and the south of the site. Sand-dunes cross the coastline. The surrounding vegetation is composed of typical phrygana while there are spots including Tamarix spp., and groves of Olea europaea. Geologically, the area's substrate belongs to the Olonos-Pindos zone. The salinity of the lagoon varies between 11-25‰. Its depth is about 5 m and its margins consist of sand mixed with pebbles.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is very important for resting and nesting birds, especially migratory species. Amongst the various elements of the bird-fauna the threatened ("Vulnerable") heron Ardea purpurea is particularly noteworthy. The area in question is used for fish-farming, and could also be used for scientific, educational and recreational purposes. According to the available data, only some fish, amphibian and reptilian taxa are known to occur in this site. The tortoise Testudo marginata although was introduced in Sardinia is virtually a Greek and southern Albanian endemic species. The presence of this taxon in the area concerned is remarkable since the habitats preferred by this animal are usually at higher altitudes. Moreover, the toad Bufo viridis has been evaluated by the CORINE-Biotopes Project while the lizard Ophiomorus punctatissimus has a very restricted distribution area in Europe, confined to the southern Greek mainland. Thus, both species have an additional reason to receive motivation D.
